Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

"Gonzo" is the definitive film biography of a mythic American figure, a man that Tom Wolfe called our "greatest comic writer," whose suicide, by gunshot, led Rolling Stone Magazine, where Thompson began his career, to devote an entire issue (its bestselling ever) to the man that launched a thousand sips of bourbon, endless snorts of cocaine and a brash, irreverent, fearless style of journalism - named "Gonzo" after an anarchic blues riff by James Booker. From Filmmaker Alex Gibney, narrated by Johnny Depp, and featuring hilarious, illuminating, and poignant contributions from both those that loved Hunter and those that sparred with him, including the legendary Ralph Steadman, Rolling Stone editor Jann Wenner, Hell's Angel Sonny Barger, George McGovern, Pat Buchanan, Jimmy Buffet and Jimmy Carter, "Gonzo" is not to be missed.

Good doc. Good interviews, wide-ranging focus on one of the world's greatest nutters.

40 out of 100  And the Oscar for best funeral ever goes to...!
Cathy from Kildare, 11 May 2009
Very little about the years before his writing career, and indeed very little on the last 20 years of his life, but what it does depict is dealt with very well. You can really see how could a journalist the early hunter was, and how his own success destroyed his ability to do the job that he so loved...Highly recommended to anyone who enjoyed any of his work

40 out of 100  Fear and.....

Documentary, does exactly what it says on the tin. I read Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, a few years ago, so was attracted to this film. It gives a good insight into the man, his strange career and in a way, his mind. You would have to be a fan to really like this, but interesting stuff all the same.

Fairly straight documentary about the great Hunter S. Thompson. Its impossible to be boring with a character this vivid, although the documentary is a little too long and po-faced about Thompson. It does a good job of explaining what a complex and contradictory character he was.

The political parts are well worth the rental alone. Johnny Depp is a smight annoying though in it. Whats with him holding the gun when he reads?? Other than that, excellent!
